   Transport

The Chandigarh Transport Undertaking functions under supervision of the Home Secretary who is also the Secretary, Transport. A Director, Transport, carries out day-to-day management, assisted by three general managers in addition to works managers, engineers and other staff. When the CTU came into existence in 1966 it had a fleet of only 30 buses; today there are 417 (including 5 Deluxe buses).

   Fleet

Total strength is 417 buses: 280 buses run on local/suburban routes; 132 buses run on long routes (Delhi, Jaipur, Amritsar, Pathankot, Hisar, Katra, Manali and Shimla). CTU buses travelled 1.24 lac kilometers a day.

   Staff

CTU's staff ratio per bus (city and suburban routes) is the lowest in the country: just 5.89 employees per bus. (Compare with Mumbai's 11.69, Delhi's 11.72, Calcutta's 9.13 Ahmedabad's 8.31). CTU staff productivity is 48.05 (Compare with 16.59 of Mumbai, 12.38 of Delhi 14.86 of Calcutta ,20.85 of Ahmedabad)The total increase in salary, over-time and TA components is Rs. 128.12 lakh up to November, 1996.

   Finances

CTU is a profit-making concern. As of November 30, 1996, CTU made an overall profit of Rs 25.29 lakh (on November 30, 1995, CTU had suffered a loss of Rs 118.30 lakh) 1996 was the first year since the inception of the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking that the Undertaking earned a profit As per report of the Ministry of Surface Transport, New Delhi till the quarter ending September, 1996 only three undertakings i.e. Kattabomman TCL, Pimpiri Chinchiwad and Chandigarh Transport Undertaking have registered profits. A CTU bus earns on average Rs 2,056 per day* (up from Rs 1784 per bus per day for the same period in 1995) CTU's total receipts are Rs 24.04 crore* (up from Rs 20.34 crore for the same period in 1995) This year the total allocation for spare parts was Rs. 5,65,75,000 but with the better control of the management on store inventory there will be a saving of Rs. 1 crore in the current financial year.

   Modernisation

CTU has purchased 62 new (50 buses are already under fabrication); they are fitted with recently introduced low-pollution, high-efficiency TATA Cummins Turbo Charge Engines. Among these new buses are six are semi-deluxe. CTU has purchased an automatic Bus Washing Machine. The CTU maintains the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) which has recently been expanded to facilitate increased bus traffic and provide better and cleaner facilities to passengers. Director Transport

   CTU is computerising

salaries and inventory have been completely computerised; computerisation of traffic section is in progress.

   Social service

Blind persons, thalessemia patients, journalists, police personnel travel free in CTU buses. Widows, freedom fighters, handicapped persons and students travel at concessional rates. Concessions cost the CTU around Rs. 3 crores per year.

   Safety record

CTU buses were involved in 24 major accidents* (down from 34 in the corresponding period of 1995).
